CHILD ABUSE AND TORTURE IN AMERICAIn May and June 2019, the U.S. government under the Trump administration has rounded up and jailed 60,000 migrant children. They’ve left kids in cars for 39 hours. They’ve had a lawyer argue that they’re not responsible for providing these kids and their families with soap and toothbrushes to maintain basic health and hygiene while packed like sardines in cages, tent cities, and prisons. They’re forcing people to sleep on cold concrete without blankets.
They’re failing to provide people with ample food, water, and medical care.
Multiple infants, children, and adults have died.
Dear readers, this is what torture looks like, and it’s happening here in America right now.
Trump and his militarized Department of Homeland Security are committing mass child neglect and human rights abuses at this very moment, and the atrocities at the border are only getting worse. A doctor called these places “torture camps.” Historical experts and many in both the Jewish and Japanese American communities have agreed they are, by definition, concentration camps. And this administration thinks that it’s okay, that they’ll get away with it, that nobody cares, that it will help Trump get re-elected in 2020.
The time to stand on the right side of history is NOW. All of us should be demanding Congress shut down these immigrant detention centers immediately.
MSNBC’s Chuck Todd tried to make the case that calling these detention locations concentration camps was over the top and not an accurate term. Then, just one week later, even the media is starting to understand that historians agree and they’re starting to cover the reality at the border.
It’s up to us to keep up the pressure to make sure the media gets it right. We cannot stand idly by while children and their families suffer at the hands of our government. There is no justification for this, and it must be put to an end before more people die.
