It’s official: folks are about to fight for American democracy before Trump destroys it for good!
President Barack Obama has assembled a team of some of his administration’s finest political and legal minds and they’re moving forward.
The group is called United to Protect Democracy, with this name itself coming from Obama’s epic farewell address to the nation. The team has already raised nearly $2 million in order to follow through with their plans to beat Trump in the courts.
The leader of the team, Ian Bassin, is in the same boat as all of us. He believes that we are on an unprecedented march toward tyranny the likes of which the nation has never seen
“When people hear concerns about democracies declining into authoritarianism, they expect that moment to come in a singular thunderclap where everyone can see that this is the time,” Bassin said. “In reality, often times, democracies decline over a period of years that happen through a series of much smaller steps.”
“As people who had the privilege of serving at the highest level of our government, we understand those guardrails,” Bassin said. “Where people might come up against them and what the tools are that we have as private citizens to hold our government accountable.”
Harvard legal extraordinaire Yascha Mounk has been providing advice and guidance to Obama’s group in recent days. He’s certain our democracy will fade if we don’t start seriously standing up to the Orange Tyrant.
“It’s really important for a bunch of people to shine the light on this question,” Mounk said. “To make very clear when autocrats are starting in any way to detract from democratic institutions.”
United to Protect Democracy has already filed 50 Freedom of Information Acts against Team Trump. If Trump won’t tell the world the truth about his abuses, then Obama’s best and brightest will make sure he’s forced to.
The group is also getting itself ready to take Trump to court for whatever his next round of completely unconstitutional actions will be. Trump’s about to have a huge thorn in his side courtesy of the 44th president.
This kind of citizen action is very inspiring, folks. It shows us that we don’t have to be an elected official in office to make a serious difference in our nation.Our fundamental American values must be preserved, but Trump’s been attacking them left and right.
If we don’t stand up for our free press now, for example, we won’t have one for much longer.
The time for action is here, so let United to Protect Democracy be an example for us all. And a hearty thanks to Obama and his team, as they’re a gift that keeps on giving!
No one knows what the future holds for now. But we all MUST maintain our resolve.
Trump is crossing so many red lines that it’s clear we are entering uncharted waters. It’s time to focus.
