Peter Julian, NDP leader candidate 2017
The economic costs of climate change increase every day.
Canadians need bold leadership on a clean energy transition and job creation strategy for workers.
Peter Julian proposed his “Just Transition Fund” that will create tens of thousands of long-term, sustainable jobs through multi-billion dollar investments in research and development, energy efficiency, clean technology and renewable energy.
This will be partially financed by eliminating federal subsidies to large oil and gas companies.
The Peter Julian strategy also calls for the creation of a national Smart Grid, and for federal funding for retraining energy workers for new jobs in energy efficiency and renewable energy – the first step taken by other countries now leading in this important sector.
Finally, “Just Transition” also means developing a better job strategy for existing fossil fuel resources. With First Nations and community consent, we need to ensure that we are refining and upgrading oil and gas resources here in Canada as we transition, to ensure existing pipelines remain safe and to keep jobs at home.
Peter Julian has pledged that a “Just Transition” will be his priority as NDP Leader. Canada has immense potential for job creation in this area, it’s time Canadian workers benefited.
