The Russians exploited this system by creating English-language sites and Facebook pages that closely mimicked those created by U.S. political activists.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>The Web sites and Facebook pages displayed ads or other messages focused on such hot-button issues as illegal immigration, African American political activism and the rising prominence of Muslims in the United States. The Russian operatives then used a Facebook \u201cretargeting\u201d tool, called Custom Audiences, to send specific ads and messages to voters who had visited those sites, say people familiar with the investigation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share details from an ongoing investigation.<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/economy\/russians-took-a-page-from-corporate-america-by-using-facebook-tool-to-id-and-influence-voters\/2017\/10\/02\/681e40d8-a7c5-11e7-850e-2bdd1236be5d_story.html?utm_term=.cbc09d43d5d7\">www.washingtonpost.com\/\u2026<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Isn\u2019t it great to know that Facebook even has such a\u00a0quasi-spam method of ad targeting?\u00a0Thanks so much, Mark Zuckerberg\u00a0\u2014\u00a0good luck washing\u00a0off that stench of treason.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>For the record, Facebook admitted\u00a0 that Russian ads just from\u00a0the\u00a0$100,000 \u201cInternet Research Agency\u201d\u00a0buy during the election were seen by <strong>ten million<\/strong> U.S. voters.
