Your desktop computer, your laptop or tablet.\u00a0 The battle is even being waged on your smartphone.<\/h4>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 It turns out that Russians aren\u2019t the only ones meddling in elections.\u00a0 Cambridge Analytica, the company currently embroiled in a data scandal with Facebook, has been exposed in a British news documentary as being a meddler-for-hire in elections around the world.<\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 The undercover investigation by Channel 4 News shows the firm\u2019s chief executive, Alexander Nix, claiming the firm secretly influenced more than 200 elections in countries around the world.<\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Methods range from entrapping politicians in compromising situations with bribes or sex workers to the simple method of spreading misinformation.<\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI mean, it sounds a dreadful thing to say, but these are things that don\u2019t necessarily need to be true, as long as they\u2019re believed,\u201d Nix told the undercover reporter in a hidden camera interview.<\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Cambridge Analytica\u2014who was also employed by Donald Trump\u2019s campaign—denies the reports, but true or not, it\u2019s an insight into how easy it is to sway and mould opinions.\u00a0 And we can be sure that some group, perhaps many, is manipulating opinions behind the scenes.<\/h4>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 The tools of this war aren\u2019t guns and bombs, but websites and whispers.<\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Remember when Pope Francis endorsed Trump\u2019s campaign for U.S. President?\u00a0 Well, it never REALLY happened.\u00a0 But the fake website that posted the made up story got plenty of hits, making lots of money for the man who created the site, and also, no doubt influencing the election.<\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 There is no easy way to fight back against purposefully spread misinformation, no soldiers to man the barricades, no laws to send perpetrators to jail.<\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 The only defense is in your head.\u00a0 Don\u2019t believe something just because it sounds true, or you want to believe it—think critically.\u00a0 Know your sources and trust them only after critical analysis and re-analysis.<\/h4>\n
